Headteacher: Mr David Johnson

10th December 2008

I can’t quite believe that we are already in December and looking forward to Christmas. Although the cold weather is a constant reminder that winter is here. The Autumn term has been a very busy one and I can certainly say that my feet have not touched the ground. Every body here at Abbey park; staff, pupils and parents have made me feel very welcome and the support during my first term has been amazing. Walking around the school each day I see children who work hard, learn lots and behave perfectly. These ingredients make Abbey Park a fantastic place to work. I feel truly proud to be Head teacher at such an exciting and vibrant school.

The school has been a very busy place over the past few weeks as the pupils and staff have been busy rehearsing for our two Christmas performances.
Whoopsy Daisy Angel will be performed by our reception class on Wednesday 17th December in the school hall, starting at 1.45pm. All parents, family and friends are welcome. Do come early though if you want to get good seats.
Our Christingle service will take place on Tuesday 9th December in The Abbey, starting at 10.30am, again everybody is welcome to join in the celebration. This year you will be entertained with a mixture of modern and traditional Christmas songs, with a retelling of the Nativity story.
Both performances promise to be very festive and will no doubt get you in the Christmas mood if you don’t feel it all ready.

Both of these events take place on Friday 12th December in school. The panto ‘Dick Whittington’ will be performed for the children by a travelling theatre group in our hall. This has enabled us to keep the cost to a minimum, as we do not have the expense of coach hire. Please do remember to pay the 4 for your child to attend by the end of next week. The Christmas Disco will take place straight after school and has been organised by the Friends of the School. Because it is non-uniform on the day, the children will go straight into the disco at the end of school. Please collect children from the car park entrance to the hall at 5pm. A snack and a drink are inclusive of the 1.50 entrance fee.

This year’s Christmas party day will take place on Thursday 18th December. The day will be jam packed with fun and games, rumour has it that there may also be a visit from a very special person! Pershore High School Caterers will be providing an exciting range of party food. For those children not on free school meals, we need a payment of 2.20 before the day.

Please help to support our healthy school ethos by providing your child with healthy food in their lunch box. We ask that you try to avoid chocolate bars, and crisps whenever possible. In the new year we will be introducing a reward system to praise pupils who have a healthy lunch box and those children who select a healthy hot meal.

A great big WELL DONE goes out to our girl’s football team, who won the Wychavon Year 4 Girl’s Tournament last month. They managed to beat St. Barnabas and Inkborough Schools to win the championship. Thanks also to Mr Perry who trained them so well! Congratulations also to some of our Year 4 pupils who performed in a recent Arts showcase at Holy Redeemer Primary with other local children.

We really value your opinions at Abbey Park and for this reason we are looking to set up a Parent Council in the early Spring Term. The council, similar to our Pupil Council will meet every half term to express their feelings about the school and help to implement positive change. We are looking for 2 parents within each year group of the school. The council will represent the voice of all parents, so if you feel you could become a member with exciting ideas, look out for the letter early in January and sign up!

The brand new children’s centre is now officially open and it offers a wide range of exciting services for parents with young children. We are very lucky to have this facility on our door step and we are certain the support it can offer our families will be invaluable. For more details of the services available please contact the centre or pop in. There is also an information board near to the front entrance to our school. After Christmas the Abbey Road Playgroup will be operating from the centre four mornings a week.

A great big thank-you goes out to the group of parents who have supported the school in its aim to get publicity around Pershore. Thanks to their hard work flyers about the school have been posted around the local area and displayed in many local shops. Please contact the school if you have any exciting ideas which could help in promoting the school further.

Thanks for your ongoing support with events like these. Our non-uniform day in November raised a total of 100 which will support the Friends of the School in their many events. 70.56 was also raised as a result of our spare coins collection on Children in Need Day, it really does prove that pennies do count!

Please remember to inform the school office if your child’s contact details change. In the case of your child being ill or in an emergency it is crucial that we have up to date contact numbers and addresses. Mobile numbers are great for contacting parents, so please let us know if Santa brings you a new phone!

To ensure the safety of our children, we ask that parents and carers discourage their children from entering the Forest School area or the year 1 class outside play area before and after school. The safest place for all children before morning whistle is on the main playground, where they will be supervised by a member of staff from 8.40am onwards.
